Best Liver Detox

The Best Liver Detox

After more than two years of recovery, I am still amazed by the liver. This amazing organ, hiding in the right side of the abdomen, has more than earned its name, which comes from an Old English word for “life.”
Your liver is the largest internal organ, and it’s responsible for an astonishing variety of life-sustaining and health-promoting. Vital for countless metabolic processes, the liver supports the digestive system, controls blood sugar and regulates fat storage. It stores and mobilizes energy, and produces more proteins than any other organ in the body. It also regulates your blood.

One of your liver’s most important functions, though — and the one most crucial to your health, is breaking down everything that enters your body, from the healthiest bite of organic food to the poisonous pesticides that linger on your salad; from the purest filtered water to a glass of wine or a cup of coffee.
Your liver’s job is to distinguish between the nutrients you need to absorb and the dangerous or unnecessary substances that must be filtered out. But when the liver is clogged and full of toxins, it can’t-do a very effective job of processing nutrients and fats. So the more toxic your body becomes, the more difficulty you’ll have to feel healthy.

How to do a Liver Detox
Ready to give your liver a healthy boost and give your entire system a thorough clean?

Seven days to prepare for liver detoxification.
Before you begin the full detox plan, it is essential that you prepare your body by strengthening your liver and colon for the work ahead. If you don’t do this, you might end up more bloated, constipated and “toxic” than you were before.
Not eating for one day releases toxins that were previously lodged in your fat cells and sends them into your bloodstream for filtration and transport through your body’s elimination channels. But without prior liver and colon support to help these toxins clear your system, the poisons may simply get moved around the body, settling into any number of sensitive organs and making you feel tired, anxious, headaches and more fatigued than when you started. So if you want to avoid feeling unnecessarily rubbish. Follow the liver detox plan below:

1. Each day, for seven days, choose at least one serving from each group of the following Liver Loving Foods:
Cruciferous, (no they are not from Harry Potter) they are vegetables of the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae). These vegetables are widely cultivated, with many genera, species, and cultivars being raised for food production such as cauliflower, cabbage, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts and similar green leafy vegetables. The family takes its alternate name (Cruciferae, New Latin for “cross-bearing”) from the shape of their flowers, whose four petals resemble a cross.

Green leafy vegetables and herbs, like parsley, kale, watercress, chard, cilantro, beet greens, escarole, dandelion greens and mustard greens
Citrus, like oranges, lemons, and limes (avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which contain a compound called naringenin that can interfere with the liver-cleansing process)
Sulfur-rich foods, like onions, shallots, garlic, leeks.

Liver healers, such as artichoke, asparagus, beets, celery, and of course, try and add Turmeric to your cooked food.

2. Each day, choose at least two of the following Colon-Caring foods: powdered psyllium husks, milled or ground flax seeds, carrots, apple, pear or berries.

3. Each day, drink as much filtered or purified water as possible,  unless you do have a severely damaged liver, which is causing Ascites and/or edema (swelling in your stomach and legs etc) in which case you should not exceed 300 ml of water per day. And you should consult your doctor immediately.

4. Each day, make sure you have at least two servings (the size of the palm of your hand a little more if you have small hands) of protein in the form of lean beef, lamb, skinless chicken, turkey or fish, or, if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, at least 2 tablespoons a day of a high-quality blue-green algae or a spirulina source (available in health food stores). If you cannot get it locally, you can order some here BRI Nutrition Klamath Blue Green Algae

5. Each day, make sure you have 1 tablespoon of oil in the form of olive oil, flaxseed oil or a flax seed oil-black-currant oil blend.

6. Avoid the following “detox killers”:

eat less salt - The Fastest And Best Liver Detox
The most important thing to avoid if your liver is not in a healthy place is SODIUM, sodium (salt is a killer, it’s as simple as that) your maximum daily intake of sodium should be between 1,500 and 2,000 milligrams, no more.

There are some great alternatives like Himalayan Pink, Sea Salt Reduced Sodium
If you ever reach the ultimate unhealthy liver stages like I did, then the first thing you should do is reduce your sodium intake as much as possible. I was down to around 200 to 300 mg per day when I was really ill because it is almost impossible to avoid sodium completely. It is in everything, naturally.

Other things to avoid include:

Excess fats, especially Trans fats
Any form of sugar, including honey and maple syrup
Artificial sweeteners
Refined carbohydrates, including white rice and products made from white flour
Gluten, found in wheat, rye, barley and all their related products, such as packaged cereals, macaroni and cheese, pizza dough, pasta, tortillas, pancake/waffle mixes and cookies, as well as in many “low-carb” products, vegetable proteins, all soy sauces and distilled vinegars
Soy protein isolates, found in many protein energy bars and processed soy foods
Alcohol, over-the-counter drugs and caffeine

OK, now that you have spent a week preparing your body, and more importantly the liver.
After following the days above it is now time to start.

Beetroot Juice - The Fastest And Best Liver Detox
The Liver Detox Diet Plan
Every day you should make one of these juices, and drink it instead of having a meal. This will cleanse your liver in the healthiest and fastest way.
1. Liver Cleaning Beetroot Juice:
• 1 beet
• 1 carrot
• 1 lemon, peeled
• 1 handful parsley
Instructions: Run all ingredients through a juicer and enjoy.
2. Green Liver Detox Juice:
• 1/2 cucumber
• 2 cups kale
• 1 lime, peeled
• 1 cup swiss chard
• 1/2 lemon, peeled
Instructions: Run all ingredients through a juicer and enjoy.
3. Liver Detox Green Smoothie:
• 2 oranges, peeled
• 1/2 rib celery
• 1 lemon, peeled
• 1/2 cup dandelion greens (or other bitter green)
• 1/2 cup parsley
Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
You should do this for a minimum of 2 weeks, now I know this is boring, which is why there are 3 recipes. So you can alternate them on different days.
If you are like me, then you will start well, for the first couple of days you will make your own juice, keep it refrigerated, take some to work etc.
But then the juicer will end up in a cupboard under the stairs, never to be seen again.

Cautions:

Some people are more vulnerable to the hazards of a liver cleanse than others. To be safe, always check with a healthcare provider before beginning any detox program. Anyone with the following conditions should only approach detoxification under a physician’s assistance:

Diabetes
Hypoglycemia
Heart Disease
Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women
Children or Senior Citizens
Colon Problems (such as IBS, Diverticulitis, Crohn’s or Colon Cancer)
Anyone with Chronic Kidney or Liver Disease
Because the kidneys and liver are intimately involved with detoxifying the body, it may seem unfair to caution those with kidney or liver disease from doing a detox. However, having fewer kidney or liver cells available to process the toxins that are released during a detox regimen makes it that much harder to eliminate them. On the other hand, those with kidney or liver disease could especially benefit from toxin elimination!

The Solution

The solution for these affected individuals is to avoid any starvation or laxative techniques.

Relying on the right foods, staying well hydrated and carefully choosing a reputable detox herbal supplements is generally appropriate for those with kidney or liver disease.

One of the supplements I use when detoxing is the Balanced Meal Multi-source Plant Protein matrix because it works, and it is available in vanilla or chocolate flavors, I always go for the chocolate one…..lol

Helping the liver get rid of toxins is no simple task, but worthwhile for the longevity of life. Even though there are many ways to approach a liver detox, some are definitely safer than others. Before committing yourself to any rigid liver detox program, investigate your plan thoroughly and be alerted to the potential side effects. Particularly important if you are living with a chronic ailment.
